The pipe you least want to dig up

Everywhere in Sydney, relining is the tidier option because nothing gets excavated. On a shared line running under a row of terraces it stops being about tidiness and becomes about whether the job is possible at a sensible price at all.

Think about what excavating a shared line actually requires. The run goes under more than one property, so it means access across more than one boundary. It means more than one owner agreeing to it, on the same dates. It means more than one surface opened and reinstated, and reinstatement is where excavation quotes go quiet in any case.

A liner needs none of that. The work happens inside the pipe through an existing access point, and every property on that section is repaired by the same sleeve on the same day.

That last part is worth stating plainly, because it is the argument that actually persuades a row of neighbours. Lining a shared section once repairs it for everyone it serves. The alternative is each owner dealing with their own portion of the same tired pipe over the following five years, at four separate call-outs, for more money in total.

Regional relining guide

Relining across the inner west

Excavating a shared line is a negotiation

More than one boundary, more than one owner agreeing, more than one surface reinstated.

None of which is a plumbing problem, and all of which is a cost.

A liner needs none of it

The work happens inside the pipe from an existing access point.

Nothing above ground is touched on anybody's property.

One sleeve repairs the whole section

Every property that line serves is repaired on the same day.

Which is cheaper in total than four owners each fixing their own portion later.

A collapse still needs replacing

No liner rescues a pipe that has lost its shape or its grade.

Under a row of terraces that is a serious job, and worth knowing about early.

Everyone gets the recording

Before and after, plus a written account of what was done.

A shared repair is a shared decision, and it goes better with shared evidence.

What is relining?

A resin sleeve is drawn through the pipe you already have and cured hard in place, using the old pipe as the mould. The defect is sealed, any joint that had opened is bridged, and what is left is continuous with no entry point. Nothing is excavated.

Why does it suit a shared line particularly?

Because a shared line is exactly the pipe you least want to dig up. It runs under a row of properties rather than one, so excavating it means access across more than one boundary, more than one owner agreeing, and more than one surface put back. A liner sidesteps every part of that.

Is it one repair or several?

One. That is the point worth understanding. A shared section lined once is repaired for every property it serves, so it is a single job at a single price rather than each owner solving their own portion of the same pipe over the following five years.

How is the cost handled between owners?

That is between the owners, and we will not give a legal opinion on how it should be split. What we can do is quote the job clearly enough that a group of neighbours can look at one figure and one piece of footage and make their own decision.

How long does a liner last?

The material is rated at around fifty years, and the repair is continuous, so there is no joint left at the point that failed.

Can everything be relined?

No. A pipe that has collapsed, lost its shape or dropped out of grade needs that section replaced, and under a row of terraces that is a serious job. The footage settles which of those you have before anybody commits.

What does relining cost across the inner west?

A patch over a single defect is $1,500 to $2,500. A full section is $4,000 to $9,000 depending on length and access. The camera inspection is $250 to $450 and comes off the job if you proceed.
